If you only have one animal, especially a young (small) one, I think a 10 gal is ok to start with. But if you had both of yours in the same 10 gal tank, I can see that being too crowded. General rule of thumb is 10 gal per animal, keeping in mind that a "long" is different than a "high". And also that rules of thumb are only guidelines to be adapted as owners see fit.
