How do I clean manzanita branch?

Yesterday I cut a large manzanita branch from my brother's yard. I'm planning on drying it out and letting my chameleon use it in the future. How do I clean this branch? I'll probably use soapy water and rinse well. I'll also cut off the leaves. I'll let it dry for a few weeks. Anything else I should do?
