Actually, Fly River Turtles (Caretocchelys insculpta) are not soft-shells. Though upon viewing one, it is easy to image the shell being soft.

As to the legality involved with acquiring a C. insculpta. The answer is yes and no. You see, it is actually illegal to import this species into the US, though many are imported each year. Once in the US, there are no regulations regarding interstate commerce, so it is perfectly legal to purchase and ship this species within the US, granted there are no local ordinances regarding turtles and tortoises on your end.

In the late spring and early summer, you will begin to notice an increase of C. insculpta available for purchase. Also, you will find them offered on Kingsnake and other reptile classifieds from time to time.

If you are seriously considering the acquisition of a C. insculpta, you should do as much research on captive husbandry as you can. While not overly difficult to keep, they do have some very specific requirements, and can be quite unforgiving if such conditions are not met. Also, be aware of the potential size they can and do obtain.
