Don't use tape...especially if you're nervous. You can actually pull the retina off of the eye if the cap doesn't want to come off or isn't actually there. My guy's been sick and has a retained cap and after much searching, and no help at all here, I found that you need to give him a drop of artificial tears...not just regular eyedrops. Use DryEyes, Hypo Tears, Natural Tears or Liquifilm Tears. You can also use a saline solution, if you feel like going to the Vet. I still have some left over from hydration thearapy and the Vet told me to gently apply some with a cotton swab. Good luck.
