stay away from pine and cedar.
best substrate - that's debatable. popular choices: cypress, newspaper, reptile carpet, reptibark....
i like carpet (i use Lizard Liner, it's a green felt like carpet) becaues it looks more natural than newspaper. I keep 2 pieces and change them out weekly (cleaning and disinfecting the old). newspaper is cheap and easy to clean - a popular choice, especially for those with many snakes. if you use a loose substrate than you have to feed outside the cage to avoid impaction.
many use spaghum moss in a humid hide in their cages - makes for a nice hide, ups humidity and helps with sheds. my bp won't use one so it is of no use to me.
there are many ways to up humidity (if you plan on using a tank/aquarium you will more than likely need to use at least one method):
second water dish on warm side
misting daily
humid hide on warm side
cover part of top
tropic-aire humidifier w/ air pump
repti-flo with pump
i found some humidity pads at drfostersmith.com
heard good things about them.
