vermiculite help asap!

hey.. my diego panther just layed a bunch of eggs and I have read a million different things on vermiculite, but I have no means of weighing the water against the vermiculite? I put enough water into where it is damp but I am worried about putting too much in... can someone give me a better way or perhaps better method to tell if it is an alright amount? thanx... also should I poke holes in the top of the container to let some air flow in to the eggs?
