Yes, better photos would help.
What you have does look like a grey rat snake. Some are gray with blackish saddles while others are tan with brownish markings. Yours looks like it is a deep tan color, but still in the normal range for a gray. You will read that grays have silver eyes, but the ones that I have, the eyes seem to match the background color, silver for a snake with a gray background, and brown for a snake with the tan coloring. If it were a Texas Rat Snake, the head would be darker and show less of a pattern. If it were an Everglades Rat Snake, it would have a red tong.
I found a page that shows a gray rat that is almost the same color as yours. If yours is not a "pure" gray, it is still a very nice looking snake. I don't think you were lied to by the person who sold you the snake.
