Fire-bellied newt laid eggs

Most curious: my friend has a single (previously assumed to be male) fire-bellied newt. Aforementioned friend got a California newt and put them together, but after a day, separated them. Now there are eggs all over the place. I'm sure they couldn't be fertilized or whatever, but what influenced her to lay the eggs?
