You don't necessarily even have to open the mouth (if you do be very careful not to scratch it, rolling a plastic pen can work). Look from above and below and watch for puffy gums or a non-symetrical head or jaw. If everything looks good then you may have to look inside to be sure but the swollen lip can clue you in without the stress of prying a sore mouth open.
