An animal is refered to as having "septicemia" when a bacterial infection has grown out of control somewhere in the body and has spread to the blood stream. Once the bacteria is in the blood stream, it can nestle into the heart, liver or other organs. An animal has to have some type of infection that allows it to become "septic". For example, an untreated RI can lead an animal into septicemia. Septicemia is not a condition that can be spread but the bacteria that caused the animal to become septic, possibly could. The onset of septicemia is not a rapid development, however if an animal goes into "septic shock" the death can be sudden.
