What kind is this?

This salamander was purchased as a Christmas gift for a friend of mine.. it was a larva at the time, only about 4 inches. It is now, certainly no more than 5 inches.. Probably no bigger than it was as a larva. I'm looking it up, and it looks like a tiger salamander, but the gills were reddish and fleshy, not thick and tubular like the tiger I used to have.. Plus, my tiger was over 10 inches, even as a larva.



By color, it looks like a tiger, but because of its size, I'm wondering what it may really be.



Any thoughts?
