need help with identification

Hello!
I live in a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina and I found this snake in my front yard around 11am on a sunny morning. It was coiled up, as if sunning itself, in some mulch/dirt surrounding a maple tree in my yard (my yard is not wooded- there are only a couple of trees in the front lawn). Its underside was pale. Its overall length was around 12inches. The photo, which was taken after I prodded him onto the driveway, shows its color and markings.
