I doubt very much that you would be allowed to import this species of small rat direct from Africa. The Mastomys Rat sp. is the main carrier of Lasser fever in Africa ( though not this particular sub-species), therefore your Wildlife division, being fully aware of this fact, would not take the chance. I know for a fact that a number of States do not allow the import of this species, but which States these are, I do not know.
Another point that is relative to this species, is the fact that certain areas of America are an ideal habitat for these animals, and should any imported animals escape, they could multiply to plague proportions in a very short time, decimating crops.
If permission were to be obtained from the USA Wildlife Division to import desease free, captive bred stock from the UK, sufficient numbers could be made available.
