How to treat alge

I have recently taken over the care of my sisters Firebelly newt and I have placed him in a clean larger tank.. Went from a 10 gallon to a 20 gallon.. His old tank had a big problem with alge and also little white bugs.. Anyhow, my question is how do I keep the alge problem down? Would getting an alge eater be an idea or a bad idea? That's something that my sister suggested, but she doesn't know how to really care for the the guy, that's why I've taken over.. Any idea's? Thanks, Lisa
