I have had problems with algae in my CFBN's tank, but I don't think it bothers her, just me. The little bugs are probably springtails and aren't a problem. I have tried Algon in my little Duetto filter (it doesn't add anything to the tank, just removes stuff) and noticed the algae growth stopped. Unfortunately I haven't replaced the packet I originally put in, so the algae is taking off again, but I think it will stop completely if I keep it up for a while. Also putting your light on a timer might help, by cutting back on the amount available for the algae to grow. Last, lots of live plants can work by outcompeting the algae for nutrients. The newts love to climb and sit in them, too!
