keeping substrate wet, bad idea?

right now i'm using those coconut chucks are substrate and my bp is about to shed soon. since I have those metal net cage top, moisture goes right now so I would pour water into the bedding to keep it moist. is this a bad idea? i'm worrie about seeing stuff growing on the coconut chunks.
