The problem of figuring age by size is that when they hibernate, they don't eat and therefore they don't grow. I got really worried when I heard people talking about having 9 month old tegus that were twice the size of mine, but theirs had not hibernated and were eating all that time, whereas mine were hibernating since soon after hatching. Drove me nuts until somebody took pity on me and clued me in.
