If you bake the wood at too high of a temp, you'll scortch the wood, leaving a charcoal residue that will harm your critters. you really only need to wash the wood off with regualt tap water, let dry if your worried about worms or something.
to lighten the color, there is a product highly used in bonsai that makes wood so white, it's like white....fffffff and for some reason, moss seems to really likes to grow there afterwards...must be the acidic levels of the effected wood.
do a search online in the bonsai groups at yahoo or just a search in google.
