I too am from Houston. I moved to Southern California about 5 years ago. Toads are everywhere in Houston, almost a menace. I've never seen a toad wild in California. Last summer while off roading in some mountains I came across a puddle with alot of tadpoles in it. I took one home and it became a toad in about a week! The toad was a spadefoot and they are known to grow fast because the puddles dissapear quickly.

This toad that is in the picture was hopping across a dirt trail. Since living in Houston I know that hop all too well. I jumped off and grabbed him. Huge toad. Way bigger than anything in Houston. He works well for scenting.
