In one end of my tank (55 gal) I have a step setup made from edging bricks and slate tiles. The first level, the bricks are on their sides so they are only about 2 inches high instead of four. On top of them, I have a 12x12 slate tile. These are about 3 inches from the end of the tank. On top of the tile, against the end of the tank, I have two more bricks, upright. On those, I have another 12x12 tile. Along the edge of the tank I have 6x6 tiles to create privacy. To make sure the 6x6 tiles don't fall, I have a branch that goes from the floor of the tank to the top and the smaller branches keep the tiles from falling.
My snake loves the hides created my the tile and brick and has never had a problem.
