Or even paper towels. Sand is not a corn's choice bedding. Too dry, and too easy to ingest. Also 100% non-digestable if it is ingested. Also, soiled spots will grow ickies very fast.
As far as the shed goes, give him another week and you'll probably find the shed skin. With the dry substrate in there, you should probably put some type of humid hide in there also, to make the shed come off easier. If he's eaten well the last 5 months, don't worry about skipping a feeding or two due to shed. ----- Dianne
