how do i get a hang on filter to work with a screen lid

i have a screen on my 20 gallon long tank and am going to get a hang on filter. how would i get the lights to be on top if i removed the screen for the filter? a quick answer is appreciated because i am going to the pet store today.

ps im getting a map turtle so the water will be relatively deep.
