well my kid will lift her tail when she goes and will seem to be very carfull to "get clear" of the mess.



as for licking thats how they "smell" so I bet your visual cue tells your bd to "check for food"



I think the air sampling when hungry is normnal for all reptiles for that reason.... watch a show on animal planet with Komodo dragons for example.... they will find food by scent from a long way off...



bd's do seem to have some level of "Visual communication" I read of a person mimicing some things to wild bd's in au and getting the responce behaviors he expected...



for all lizards a "Head bob" is a "I am big and strong, bow to me!" kind of thing and with bd's an arm wave is a "I don't want to fight, let's be nice" kind of thing....

try using your thumb to do a small "o" when a bd is watching and see what happens....



I do think they are *very* smart and have personality that goes beyond the size of the brain
