I'm hoping everyone thinks this is a good idea...
I'd like to start compiling a list of homeowner's insurance companies as relates to the herp keeping hobby, so if anyone would like to email me with answers to the following questions (anonymously of course), I'd appreciate it..... Hopefully, at some point, the "statistics" would prove useful to groups like NAROA or PIJAC.... maybe we can lobby or legislate against discrimination by these companies.
All particulars will be kept private - any use of the information will be for the benefit of the herp hobby as a whole and will be of a statistical nature. If everyone thinks this is a good idea, I'll post the statistics here. Thanks.
Were you dropped, or denied coverage by one or several insurance companies?
If so, which one(s), and what was their reason given?
What state did this occur in?
If you currently have homeowner's insurance and you keep reptiles, does your insurer:
a) know you keep reptiles
b) don't know you keep reptiles (ie. they asked about exotics, etc.and you answered no)
c) didn't ask and didn't tell
Do you live in an area where the animals you keep are banned? (This would qualify as a legitimate reason for a denial of coverage)
Do you know if the company has a formal policy for or against insuring households that keep reptiles (or exotics) and did they follow that policy in your case? (In other words, does company A formally say they have no problem insuring households with reptiles, and yet you have been cancelled/denied?)
Please add any other relevant information you can think of regarding this matter...
email: naddred$@hotmail.com (remove the $ sign)
Please put reptile in the subject
Thanks everyone!
Lisa
