Wooden tank problem

so i have this wooden tank...about the equivalent of a 180 gallon...and i have been using repti-carpet as my substrate. i want to switch to sand--or crushed oats? is that what it is? where do you get that stuff?--but should i get a liner? like some plastic something? where would i get something like that?
