There are a couple of varieties of RES

There are several sliders that bear the symbolic red ears that earn the red eared slider their name. Yours looks like your run of the mill RES. Your friends could too, I've seen tons of different shell, skin, marking variations. OR, your friend could have a different race. Also if one is wild and the other captive, that can make a difference.
