A few things that make them "fire up":
1) Mess with them when they don't want to be messed with.
2) Suddenly have animals, WHICH THEY'VE NEVER SEEN come into the room.
3) Place another chameleon (male or female) in front of them, or withing their site.
4) Come up on them unexpectedly, and see what they do when they get surprised.
5) Come up to them very early in the morning, when they haven't fully woken-up, and try to handle them.
6) Introduce a "foreign object" to them; like a camera, a new branch, a new climbing vine, a new plant, etc... (And that not even mentioning the flash of the camera).
7) Placing a mirror in front of them. (A photographers favourite trick).
8) When a female is rejecting a male for reproduction.
There are so many more...but if you leave them alone, you'll see cool, beautiful colors. But when irritated, THAT'S when the bright contrasting colors come out.
Notice the list above. They are all UNPLEASANT circumstances that make them produce the colors we all like to see/show-off.
But you're right, not all of these things will stress the cammy out, and not all cammies have the same character. (Some things will freak one cammy out, and then again, some things won't). But let's not be like a child who does not know better. Let's be considerate of another life, and treat them in a way that keeps them happy. (Isn't that one of the reasons we took-up the raising of our little critters)?
Just an observation. ----- In Christ: Raymond
