Most everyone seems to be either definitely for or definitely against possible hets. I’m kind of glad that enough people are against them to keep them steeply discounted for me to afford.

I like my odds that some of my projects will pay off and I will not be too upset with the ones that don't as at least I had a lot of fun along the way and don't have much more than time in any of them. By spreading my small investment around I feel better about the risk. Of course the down side is having to keep a few more animals than I would like (or rather my wife would like). If you have more time and space than money and are willing to take risk possible hets might be for you.

I have a 1999 66% chance het caramel male that has yet to breed for me. If he had been a high dollar 100% het (caramel gene is not a good example as I've seen those surprisingly reasonable) from my only project I would be more bumed about it. On the other hand, I'm hoping to breed two of the three daughters of my 50% chance het stripe for next summer (still have a feeding job cut out for me on that one). I'm realistic about my odds of producing a stripe in 2004 being low but I don't even know what I would have had to pay for hets to have a shot at producing one that soon (probably 20 to 40 times what I have in that project).
