The phenols (oils) given off by softwoods like pine can irritate a snake's lungs. People have kept snakes on pine without problems, but i guess it's one of those 'extra risk' things. You probably already know to stay away from cedar, which is 10 times worse than pine. Aspen is a wood bedding that doesn't contain phenols. So is butcher paper :D.
