can someone please school a newbie?

The pet store by my has what they are calling a "Jungle carpet python". Now i come here and i see things like jaya and irian and other things, and im confused. can someone explain the different types to me?

Also, the snake, which is a baby, is beautiful. It is black and yellow, and the black is like velvet, it is so deep that it looks soft to the touch. absolutely beautiful.

Its my understand these carpet pythons get anywhere from 5-9 feet long depending on what type they are. can someone explain to me get only 5 ft long? I would love to have one, but anything over 5 or 6 feet is too much for me.
