Hi,
Do it when he's sleeping as during the day. I find that they're a bit dopey when they've been sleeping and mine at least don't usually panic right away. By the time they do become more aware of what's going on, you would have had time to put them into a temporary container and they go back to sleep. Just be careful to never grab them by their tails if they do take off on you.
