He is housing a baby redtail and small boas prefer smaller cages. A plastic tub will be fine. As long as the tub is large enough to have a temp variant at each end and holes for air circulation it will work great. I use a sweater box rack for my small boas and they thrive in it. For adults I use 4ft by 2ft by 1ft cages. Here is a pic of my setup.
