While the black spot (or spots) on either side of the vent are usually present in females, I *hear* this can occasionally fail as a reliable means of sexing. Using the coloration of the body as a guide is even less reliable. The best way I know of is to look for the row of enlarged *post-anal* scales directly behind (and aligned with) the vent slit.
