I think some snakes just have their own personality, and I'm not sure they change much. I have a baby cornsnake that is NEVER in it's hide, and I'm sure he thinks he's a tree python or something! It sleeps on the highest branch in his cage and never runs from me. It's a cool snake. From what I hear, corns do like to climb though. I think they feel safer the higher they are. Do you have something in your cage for your snake to climb? Here is a picture of my setup. My snake loves it.
