I wouldn't worry too much. Males can breed at a much younger age/smaller size than females. Though while young (under a year old) you can feed him every 4-5 days. Any more than this is unhealthy (AKA powerfeeding).

Just to let you know, females can be bred smaller, but the generally recommended size is at least 300 grams and 3 feet. If you breed them smaller than this, I've heard that you have a greater likelihood of eggbinding.
