Cay Caulkers are extremely rare. Very few people offer them for sale. Mine came from Scott at Amazon Reptile Center and he bought them from a friend who got the parents from Gus at RioBravoReptiles. They only get about 3.5 ft max. They really are the smallest of all the boas. For their rarity in collections, the prices aren't too bad. I think I paid $350 for the pair. Scott at Amazon bought the rest of his friend's litter and may still have another pair left for sale. I like them because they naturally look like they're anerys.
I hear ya about the larger size in boas. I have been back and forth with that for awhile and well, I gave in b/c some are just so beautiful. My argentine boas are going to be my largest snakes in my collection with a size of over 7 ft...but thats years away.
I think what it comes down to for me is safety and awareness. If you work with any snake over 6 feet, you have to be on the ball when working with them. I simply have one rule, DON'T TRUST THEM! They are afterall, wild animals...and as such they can be somewhat unpredictable. And its not a matter of getting constricted or suffocated to death (well maybe with some boas) but more so getting bitten and needing stitches. I wear glasses so I'm not too worried about eyes but some people wear goggles when working with larger snakes. And you never know...my male subadult ringed python has recently taken a 180 degree turn with his personality and now won't let me hold him anymore, ever. I use hooks with alot of stuff anymore b/c all I have time for is moving them to clean just before feeding...which is bad since I'm reversing any acclimation to handling.
I have a few boas that are simply wierd about their aggressive behavior. My one hog only attacks when she is in her cage...once I get her out, she's fine and can be handled...but its the initial reaching in that can be tricky.lol.
Overall, I'm glad I did it but I'll be sure to make my new reptile room escape proof for safety reasons. I'm moving in 2 more weeks so I'll be super busy till november. ----- Sincerely, Jason ----- My Website: www.members.aol.com/northeastsnakes
Too many snakes to list in my signature anymore.
