I don't know if they NEED it, especially since you're not planning on breeding them. However, I brumate all my herps even though I don't breed them either.



My wandering garter gets banished to the garage for a few months over the winter. I take the whole 20 long out to the garage, so his hide and water are in there with him. In South TX, my garage only got down to around 50 or so. If the snake wanted to move around, he could, and if he wanted to sleep, he could. I'm moving so this winter I might get a colder garage.



He didn't eat for 330 days or so last year, so the hibernation was actually better conditions metabolism-wise. He didn't eat right after being warmed back up either.
