When I had my brevi's that is what I used. The smell is stronger when the bag is first opened, it will subside once you have it in the tank with everything else and is safe to use. They rarely even touched ground. here is a pic of my set up. You can see the layering which helped with drainage.



yes, that is perlite in the mix but there was a layer of mesh b/t it and the upper substrate. I used to make terrariums in FL and this was a rather elaborate setup, well, the part underground. I had screening rolled in tubes for the plants to set in on top of small stones so the soil would not get saturated.
