Is full-spectrum lighting necessary?

I recently bought a gecko (I have experience with other herps) and was wondering why a desert creature doesn't need full-spectrum lighting? I don't want him to develop any problems associated with an inability to absorb vitamins because of a lack of light. I do give him vitamins regularly. He has a black bulb heat lamp (the kind that emits red light), but should I also include a full-spectrum bulb? Thanks!
