That really doesn't sound right about the piece coming off of him when you picked him up. Might want to make sure the humidity is high especially right now with this problem. Keep an eye on him and if it doesn't get better go to a vet.

That enclosure that you have sounds like it has cool possibilities. Me personally I would figure out how to get belly heat in there. Can you get some Heat tape or NEW Heat Wire under the enclosure. Usually you can always work something out. If it is one of those glass display casses like I am thinking how are they getting fresh air. Do you have holes or vents in it? Just curious. Also, is the light in the enclosure? Watch out for the bulb if it is. As you know they like to explore every cm of their enclosure. Watch out for burns or worse the bulb breaking. Good luck
