Outdoor carpeting as substrate

I've seen a few people recommend that indoor/outdoor carpeting as a substrate but the petstore told me that there is some sort of toxin that will kill reptiles. Has anyone else heard anything about this. I was considering using it for my snakes. If anyone could shed some light on this i'd really appreciate. Thanks in advance
