New dart frog...need help with habitat..^_^

hey i want to buy 2 new dart frogs..but i heard you have to make a nice habitat for them..and i've decided to use gravel with water and aquatic plants. However, i have seen that there is dirt in other tanks that i saw online and my question is..how is the water so clean. so should i put dirt in? how can i maintain the water clean.
