It seems to me, most water snake species get darker as they get older. The exception are captive specimens. Many captives I have kept from neonates tend to retain better coloration. But most of the WC adults I find with the exception of a few are fairly dark. Some are almost indistiguishable from a distance from cottonmouths they are so dark. Andy
