There is a reason that in the "sophisticated" countries a prescription is needed to obtain medications. It is all related to ensuring medical care is given in a quality and controled manner. I'm sure you are very familiar with Flagyl and it's uses in reptiles but in general, the tendency to use improperly would be the norm if access was for everyone. There is a move towards increasing the status of animals from things to beings of identity. This increases the responsibility and liability in the role of veterinarian. A VCR (vet/client relationship) is necessary for a veterinarian to write a prescription.

Depending on your situation (large collections may be viewed as farmers) an on going relationship with your veterinarian may allow him to be confident enough in your abilities and knowledge to allow you to have Flagyl on hand.



When discussing this with clients I sometimes bring up human antibiotics. If they were given out freely 15 years ago it may have been like a lottery for time-strapped multichildren families who had a hard time waiting at the doctors. Now we know that over use of antibiotics will not harm the person per say, but it does happen to develope the so-called superbug. Something that at the time no one could have imagined.
