Earlier this year, a bill aimed at banning "dangerous exotic animals", including all "members of the boidae" as well as the Nile, salvator, crocodile, and blackthroat/whitethroat monitors passed both the NYS Assemby and Senate (the two lawmaking bodies). Due to public outrage, NY governor Pataki sent the bill back to the Assembly for modification. The ban on all boidae was changed to include only anacondas, burmese pythons, reticulated pythons, African rock pythons, and amethystine pythons. The Nile, salvator, crocodile, and blackthroat/whitethroat monitors will still be banned if this bill is signed into law. The bill is currently on the Governor's desk, awaiting his signature or veto.



I wrote Gov. Pataki about this issue yesterday. I hope all other NYS herp keepers do so as well.
