Goldfish do outgrow bowls, or they would if living in a bowl didn't kill them so quickly. The stunted growth thing is no more true of fish than it is of snakes. Living a small tank will slow down a fish's growth, but it will also damage its health.

Goldfish should either be eaten by something quickly or be allowed to reach their full 50 year lifespan and 14 inch adult size in large roomy tanks with tasteful decor.
