I have had my hands in herpetoculture since about age 8. That now puts me 3 decades deep. Been away from time to time - but I'm very interested in getting back up to speed. My post was motivated by cleaning up our basement and coming across all of my old "Vivarium" magazines. In particular, an issue from 1994 that dealt with breeding varanids in captivity. It also covered the captive breeding of V.Komodensis at the National Zoo. Just under a decade ago, breeding monitors seemed to be more happenstance than planned.
In trying to update my knowledge base, it certainly appears that things have changed - some.
Looks like the Ridge Tails are bred almost commonly - and have found some articles and posts pertaining to V.flavirufus and V.Gouldii.
Mark Bayless was kind enough to address my query on another forum, but thought I would offer it up here as well.
Is anyone working with, or had success with the smaller tree monitors? (V.beccari, prasinus) In my internet wanderings I have seen pics of what appear to be both yellow, and blue tree monitors - and able to find very little information about them.
For clarities sake, I don't currently have any varanids. They are restricted in MA, requiring a permit. I did have a permit, many years ago, and primarily handled rescues and adoptions. If I can convince the Commonwealth of Mass, and my wife that I should be allowed to keep monitor lizards again, who knows.
