i use it to support my pothos plants so they go up and not out. i just cut the stalks in half and sanded them VERY well. theres lots of little sharp splinters on the ends and if you cut it down the middle like i did even more. if you use bamboo make sure that you sanded it very well and rub you palm over the edges to check if you misses a spot.
