Depending on where you live, you might try to find someone that wants the snake, or find a place to hibernate it and release it at a later time.
A broom and a trashcan work for most snakes, all you have to do is "sweep" them carefully inside. You could also use gloves if you are afraid of being bitten. It doesn't really sound like anything venomous from the US, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Effects of a snakebite are just like small scratches, just use some alcohol and neosporin if bitten. Normally ratsnakes (if that's what it is) do not struggle much after picked up. You can use pillowcases to easily contain them while transporting.
If you know of a local herp society, generally there are some people who would take the snake if you wanted. They actually make very interesting pets if your interested in keeping it. ----- Current Collection:
