If it's bacterial, some of the broad spectrum tropical fish medications may help. If the water is filtered/changed frequently, the lowering of the ammonia levels may offset the bacterial growth. An acidic pH helps, too as you've stated.



If the condition continues after trying to control the water condition, a vet should be consulted.
